Exploration Project
Chance Oil and Gas is seeking input from affected First Nations communities for its Eagle Plains Exploration Project, which will improve the region’s self-sufficiency in energy supply and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by displacing more emission-intensive energy imports.
The project will also contribute to Yukon’s economic independence and diversify the Yukon economy by providing employment opportunities. Currently, 50% of Chance’s full-time employees are Indigenous, which demonstrates a commitment to local employment.
Chance plans to undertake a broad area exploration project over a period of up to 10 years on exploration permits that have been awarded to the company. Chance currently holds approximately 4,000 sq kms of exploration permits at Eagle Plains. The project includes drilling up to 30 new exploration wells, acquiring up to 1,500 sq kms of new 3D seismic data, acquiring up to 2,000 kms of new 2D seismic data and extended flow testing of significant discoveries.
Access to the sites will use existing and new winter trails with controlled access to address safety issues and limit traffic to authorized users. The program is planned to occur only during winter seasons. No resource development is planned during this phase of activity. Hydraulic fracturing techniques are not going to be used.
Environmental baseline studies
Chance has undertaken several environmental baseline studies of the area over the years to learn about the ecology of the region, provide a foundation for impact mitigation, learn how to limit any future issues and ensure project management plans are developed in an informed manner.
The main feature of the Eagle Plains are rolling hills, covered by pervasive permafrost and stunted black spruce. Open areas are abundant, covered by low growing lichen and shrub brush.
Fires are a natural occurrence in Eagle Plains. Each fire is monitored closely by the Government of Yukon. They are often left to burn out naturally. Fire areas can be thousands of hectares in size due to the lack of firefighting capabilities, reduced precipitation and high winds. Fires have an impact on permafrost thaw near the surface and on wildlife use of recently burned areas.
